The new device, which will be able to store up to 4,000 songs, will cost £329. The 8GB model, which can store up to 2,000 tracks, will still be available at the price of £269.
More than 4 million IPhones have been sold since the product launched in the United States in July last year. British consumers got their hands on the device - which combines a touchscreen wireless web browser with an iPod music player and a mobile phone - last November.
"For some users, there's never enough memory," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPod and iPhone marketing.
"As music collections become bigger, we now have even more content you can put on these devices, and people are always seeking the ability to put more and more on. Doubling the amount of storage in each of the products is a pretty good way to go."
However, the new iPhone 16gb will still not run on the 3G mobile phone network for high-speed internet access, as Apple says that the chips needed to run 3G handsets are still too power hungry, and will drain the iPhone's battery life too quickly.
This sounds pleasing but 3G Iphone is on my list and I hope we will see it at the end of this year. They could also Improve the camera to make it compete better with the N95. Anyway the Phone is a winner and with a 16gb this is 1 hungry device that needs to be fed.

A 12th Century key to Islam's holiest shrine has sold at auction in London for $18.1m (£9.2m).
The key to the Kaaba - the ancient cube-shaped shrine in Mecca - went to an anonymous bidder at Sotheby's.
The auction house said the price set a record for the sale of an Islamic work of art.
Made of iron and measuring 37cm in length, the key is engraved with the words "This was made for the Holy House of God".
The key was the centrepiece of Sotheby's Islamic art sale, which realised more than $40m (£21.5m) in total.
'Important symbol'
Head of Sotheby's Islamic art department Edward Gibbs said: "Remarkably, the sale realised more than the Islamic department's annual total for 2007, demonstrating beyond doubt the burgeoning and international demand for Islamic art."
The key is the only known example to be in private hands. All of the other 58 Kaaba keys are in museums.
Sotheby's said the key was "arguably one of the most important symbols of Islam".
The auction house said the keys were dedicated to caliphs, starting with the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad.
"As a physical object, the key to the holiest building of an entire religion, it demonstrates the authority of the caliph and is the ultimate emblem of power," said Sotheby's.

Amir Khan must beat Martin Kristjansen in style on Saturday if he is to land a world lightweight title in 2008, according to his promoter Frank Warren.
Khan, 21, faces Denmark's Kristjansen at Bolton Arena in a fight that has been billed as a WBO title eliminator.
Warren said: "If he is going places, Amir has got to deal with the Martin Kristjansens of this world in style.
"Making a world title fight isn't a problem. It is about making the fight at the right time."
The 30-year-old Kristjansen has lost just once in 23 contests and never been stopped, while Khan is making only his 17th appearance as a professional.

And Warren continued: "That is why this is such a tough fight for Amir. If he comes through, then we will make the decision on what his next move is."
Khan is adamant he is ready for a crack at America's WBO title-holder Nate Campbell, who recently stunned Juan Diaz to claim the title, or interim belt holder Joel Casamayor.
But Khan, who has set his heart on becoming Britain's youngest ever world champion, insists he will not entertain thoughts of Campbell until he has sent Kristjansen the way of his 16 previous opponents.
Khan said: "I've trained hard just like I do for all my fights and I'm in the best condition I could possibly be in.

"I've got the strength and the speed and in every fight I am getting better and better."
However, Kristjansen says he will expose Khan's lack of experience and is determined to dash the former Olympic silver medallist's world title ambitions.
Kristjansen said: "I've seen his last three fights and I'm not impressed. He is strong and fast but is still young and does not have the experience that I have. I will expose him.
"Khan is saying that this will be the easiest fight of his career and if he believes that then he is going to be in for a big surprise on the night.
"He might think that he can stop me inside three rounds and I will let him carry on thinking that. But I've trained for a long hard fight so he had better be prepared.
"Khan is the big star in Britain and wants to fight for the world title but he won't be getting past me."
